Adventure Doesn't Find You
Back in May, I was on the Big Island of Hawaii. With few expectations of things I wanted to see (because I knew I was going to be blown away by the place), I knew I wanted to at least see one turtle. Or Honu as the locals say.
Today I was charged by a moose. Not a bluff, a full blown charge by a Momma Moose. It was, by far, the sketchiest moment of my life. At no point did I feel in control. And not only did I put my own life in danger, but I also put my dog, Gregor’s, life in danger. Which is another level of guilt and stress that I’ve never felt before. Even though most people may not know about this place, nor what it’s called; it is a crucial turning point (literally) in the movie Forest Gump. This had been the most incredible, adventurous year of my life. To look back on these 365 days, I don’t even know where to begin. I guess, the obvious first step is January 1, 2018. Each year, companies come out with their new line of apparel. And each year I think the same thing. How could this lineup be any different than last years’, or the year before that? And how could they justify the price tag they put on it. Especially when it’s not uncommon for pullovers to run a price tag over $100, shells to be in the $200-$400 range, and beefy down jackets to be anywhere from $200-$800+. It’s absurd! If you’ve ever been lucky enough to see a single Manta Ray swimming in the ocean, it is truly a once in a lifetime experience. Mantas, stunningly enough, can reach a wingspan of up to 23 feet. Even with their massive size, they are as graceful as a flock of Starlings. And during a trip to Hawaii this past May, I got to witness this first hand. And I can tell you, there is nothing else like it. My girlfriend Court and I spent 10 days road tripping around the Big Island of Hawaii. We got off the plane, grabbed …
