Explore Kanab, Utah | Coral Pink Sand Dunes & Peak-a-Boo Slot Canyon

Every year, for Courtney’s birthday, I try to plan something special. The first year in Utah, we went down to Zion National Park. Last year, we went down to Moab and rented a Side-by-side. This year, we headed down to the desert once again, to the tiny town of Kanab. Smaller than the bustling oasis of Moab, but full of adventure! And that, we found a ton! Saturday morning, we got up early to go sandboarding at the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park just outside of town. Yes, you read that right, sandboarding. The drive in was nothing short …

#Vanlife in San Diego, California

After years of Instagram envy, seeing all these couples and adventurers living out of a sprinter van, exploring all the greatest places in the world, we finally did it! We joined the #Vanlife! Well, I guess that’s a stretch. We didn’t exactly quit our jobs, move into a van with our dog, and adventure full time. Come to think of it, we’ve done the exact opposite. Instead, we wanted to see if we’d even like the #Vanlife after all these years of fantasizing about it. We’re used to car camping out of the truck for most of our trips, but …

In this new series, Campfire Stories, I wanted to capture some of my favorite, funny, and crazy moments from trips I’ve been on. For my first one, I wanted to tell you about how everything went from epic, to horrendous, for my buddy Yuta in a matter of minutes on my trip to Iceland. Check it out, and let me know what you think!

South Lake Tahoe Trip

The first time you see the lake, as you crest the mountain pass from Reno, is a sight you’ll never forget. Driving through the dense evergreen forest, the deep blue of the lake contrasts with the green surrounding the rim. And to add to its beauty, the white peaked mountains on the western edge of the  lake climb high into the sky. And that’s only the beginning of the trip. A trip we just got back from this past weekend. We met up with some friends from back east who rented a house to ski for the week. Since it …

Ode to Car Camping

As much as I hate to admit, we go car camping far more than we do any other type of camping. Car camping, for those unfamiliar with the terminology, is when you load up all you stuff, drive to a campsite or public land, and set up your camp very close to where you parked your car. Most people just call this camping, but in my “younger days” I scoffed at the idea. I thought the only way to camp was if you drove to the trailhead, strapped everything to your backpack, hiked many miles into the woods, and then …

Swimming with Sea Turtles in Hawaii

I had always imagined, since the moment we booked the flights to Hawaii, that I’d get the chance swim with a sea turtle. But I thought it was pipe-dream. The odds of finding a sea turtle, let alone swim with one, were slim to none. Even as we gathered our bags from the baggage carousel at the airport, I was holding out hope that all the turtle memorabilia found in the gift shops weren’t going to be the only ones I’d see on the trip. And some times, you don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars on an excursion or …

Road Trip Guide to the Big Island of Hawaii

To me, Hawaii has always felt like another country. Sitting there alone, off in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. A tropical paradise, just out of reach from the mainland United States. Which is partly the reason why my girlfriend Court and I chose it as the destination for our most recent trip. And because flying anywhere far from Utah takes forever and can be quite expensive. Nevertheless, we planned to road trip around the entire Big Island of Hawaii, despite the endless news coverage of the erupting volcano and lava flow. And thankfully we did, because this trip was …

Trip to the Big Island of Hawaii

For 10 days, we drove around the Big Island of Hawaii exploring everything above and below the water. We made stops to stay in Kona, Naalehu, Mountain View, Hilo,  Kawaihae, and plenty of places in between. We brought our own snorkeling gear so that we could hop in to the ocean anywhere we could. In that same bag, we packed our camping gear to spend a few nights under the stars at a beach park. Can’t wait to write about our adventures and what we learned along the way. Most notably, that the news sensationalizes the impact that the volcano …

Surf Costa Rica | Playa Negra

I’ve always heard incredible stories from family, friends, and neighbors about how epic the surfing was in Costa Rica. As a kid, I grew up only surfing the New Jersey shores during summer.  Ironically, it wasn’t until I moved up to New England, where the water is always cold, did I begin to take surfing seriously. And that’s when a buddy of mine, named Jake, started throwing around the idea for a surf trip to Costa Rica. Nothing was set in stone, but he had spent a summer there before and wanted to go back. The next thing I knew, …
