Kihei, on the island of Maui, Hawaii, was significantly less touristy than Lahaina. And that is a good thing! It really seemed like this was the place people actually “lived” on the island if they were outside the big city Kahului. Of course there was a main town center, but this town really seemed to have the beach as the main focus for being here. After going to the Big Island of Hawaii a few years ago, we were itching to get back anyway we could. So for our family trip this year, we headed over to the Island of Maui. The goal of the trip was to see and do as much as possible, and since we live in a land-locked state, spend as much time in the ocean as we could. Coming from a guy who lives in a tourist town, I know one when I see one. And Lahaina is definitely a tourist town. But I will say, tourist towns aren’t all bad, despite the connotations that they get for high priced restaurants and cliche T-shirt shops. After spending over a week on the island of Maui, we wished we could’ve spent more time in Lahaina. Our trip to Maui this summer was centered around the opportunity to go SCUBA Diving. I got my open water certification just a week before flying to Hawaii. For my first real open ocean diving experience, it exceeded all of my expectations, and I couldn’t have asked for a better dive. We booked two dives with Maui Dive Shop which has a few dive shops around the island. On the day of the dive, we drove down to Maalaea Harbor where we’d meet the crew and hop onboard their charter. Maui, Hawaii, what an incredible island! My wife, her parents, and I spent 10 days driving around the second largest of the Hawaiian Island chain. We spent as much time in the water as possible, while also getting our fill of fresh fish and beer when on land. Over the 10 days, we moved around quite a bit, staying in Lahaina, Kapalua, Kihei, Hana, and Kahului, each for a couple nights. For 10 days, we drove around the Big Island of Hawaii exploring everything above and below the water.
